EDUCATION

CONSERVATION

SUSTAINABILITY

Barefoot & Bloomin’ is a small travelin’ backyard farm with a nature-inspired little library. We spark a love of nature, gardening, reading, STEM and the arts… with a focus on conservation, sustainability, and promoting meaningful connections to Earth and one another. Barefoot & Bloomin’ is a registered nonprofit in Missouri.

Nature-inspired literature is a gateway to curiosity and connection, and an invitation to step outside, go barefoot (when possible) and explore the living world around us. Nature-inspired literature helps instill a love of nature and a love of reading.

At Barefoot & Bloomin’ many of our outreach programs connect to nature-inspired literature because we believe:

1) Nature-inspired literature sparks curiosity and imagination (read more…)

Nature-inspired books introduce children to incredible facts about animals, plants, and the changing seasons. A book about forests can transport them to a world of towering trees and hidden wildlife, while a book about decomposers can introduce them to mysterious creatures within the soil.

2) Nature-inspired literature encourages outdoor exploration (read more…)

Reading about nature often inspires children to step outside and experience it for themselves. After learning about birds, they may want to try birdwatching. A book about insects might encourage them to explore their backyard and look for tiny creatures. This hands-on engagement strengthens their connection with the natural world.

3) Nature-inspired literature builds an early appreciation for conservation and sustainability (read more…)

When children read about endangered animals, climate change, growing community gardens, or the importance of trees, they begin to understand why protecting nature matters. Books can help children develop empathy for the environment and instill values of conservation and sustainability from an early age.

4) Nature-inspired literature enhances learning skills, through real-world connections (read more…)

Books about nature can complement science lessons, build upon reading skills, and simply make learning more engaging. Children who read about weather patterns, animal habitats, or plant life cycles are more likely to retain information because they can connect what they read to real-life experiences.

5) Nature-inspired literature provides a screen-free learning alternative (read more…)

In today’s digital age, books about nature offer a great way for children to take a break from screens while still learning in an engaging way. The vivid photos and detailed descriptions in nonfiction books bring nature to life in a way that is both educational and fun.
